Muthira Kizhi (Kulatha Kizhi)

Muthira Kizhi herbal bolus therapy for rheumatoid arthritis and joint inflammation

About Muthira Kizhi (Kulatha Kizhi)

Muthira Kizhi (Kulatha Kizhi) is a dry-heat Ayurvedic therapy using warm horse gram boluses to relieve joint inflammation, swelling, stiffness and low back pain. A rooksha (dry) form of swedana, the coarsely powdered horse gram (kulattha) is tied into small linen boluses and massaged firmly over the body by two therapists. Because it works through dry herbal heat rather than oil, it is especially suited to conditions where swelling, fluid retention or heaviness aggravates the pain, and where oily therapies are not advisable. At Agasthya, Muthira Kizhi is used for inflammatory and rheumatic joint conditions, low back ache, and stiff, swollen joints, relieving pain and heaviness while improving mobility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Muthira Kizhi (Kulatha Kizhi)?
Muthira Kizhi, also called Kulatha Kizhi, is a rooksha (dry) form of swedana in which horse gram (kulattha) is coarsely powdered, tied into small warm linen boluses, and massaged firmly over the body by two therapists. Because it works through dry herbal heat rather than oil, it is especially suited to conditions where swelling, fluid retention or heaviness aggravates the pain.
Which conditions is Muthira Kizhi used for?
Muthira Kizhi is used for rheumatic and inflammatory joint conditions, low back ache, stiff and swollen joints, general body pain, and cases where excess Kapha or fluid retention worsens symptoms. It is often combined with other therapies as part of a treatment programme tailored to the patient.
How is Muthira Kizhi different from oily Kizhi like Njavarakizhi?
Muthira Kizhi is a dry (rooksha) therapy that reduces excess fluid, swelling and heaviness, whereas Njavarakizhi is an oily, nourishing (snigdha) therapy that rebuilds and strengthens tissue. Muthira Kizhi is chosen when the goal is to reduce inflammation and fluid; Njavarakizhi when the goal is to nourish and strengthen weakened muscle, disc or nerve tissue.
How long is a course of Muthira Kizhi?
Each session lasts about 45 minutes, typically given over 7-14 days as part of a treatment protocol. The exact number of days depends on the condition being treated and is decided by the consulting physician.
