Nadiswetham (Tubular Localised Steam)

Nadiswetham tubular localised steam therapy for frozen shoulder, knee arthritis and joint stiffness at Agasthya Kerala

About Nadiswetham (Tubular Localised Steam)

Nadiswetham is a focused, localised steam therapy where medicated steam is directed at a specific joint or affected region through a tube (nadi), rather than enveloping the whole body as in Bashpa Swedam. The tube allows the therapist to target a single area — a frozen shoulder, an arthritic knee, a stiff neck — with concentrated warmth and herbal vapour, opening srotas precisely where they need to be opened. It is the therapy of choice when the rest of the body is in good condition but one specific joint or region needs intensive, targeted treatment. Often paired with a preceding oil application (Abhyangam or local oil massage) so the warmth drives the oil deep into exactly the area being treated.

Duration

10–15 minutes per affected region; given as part of a 7–21 day protocol

Key Benefits

Targets a single joint or region with concentrated medicated steam
Opens srotas (channels) precisely where they need to be opened, without whole-body sweating
Drives previously applied oil deeper into the specific area being treated
Ideal when only one or two regions are affected and a full-body steam would be excessive
Pairs naturally with local oil therapies, Upanaham, and Marma point work on the same region
Allows precise, tissue-specific application of warmth and herbal vapour

Indications

  • Frozen shoulder and shoulder stiffness
  • Localised joint pain and arthritis
  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Cervical stiffness
  • Localised muscle spasm
  • Specific-region rheumatic pain

Frequently Asked Questions

When does Dr. Bose choose Nadiswetham over full-body Bashpa Swedam?
When the patient's overall condition is good but one specific region — a frozen shoulder, an arthritic knee, a stiff cervical area — needs intensive treatment. Whole-body steam in that situation would be excessive (and tiring for elderly or debilitated patients). Nadiswetham focuses the warmth and herbal vapour precisely where it is needed, sparing the rest of the body. It is the more targeted, conservative option of the two.
Is Nadiswetham given on its own or alongside other therapies?
Almost always alongside other therapies. A typical sequence is local oil application (Abhyangam or condition-specific oil massage) followed by Nadiswetham — so the steam drives the freshly applied oil deeper into the joint. It also pairs naturally with Upanaham on the same region, and is frequently combined with Marma point work to mobilise the area before deeper structural therapies.
How long is each Nadiswetham session?
10–15 minutes per affected region. Because it is concentrated and localised, it does not need to be applied for as long as whole-body Bashpa Swedam. If two regions are being treated (for example both shoulders or shoulder and neck), each receives its own session sequentially. The therapist monitors the skin temperature throughout to ensure the steam is therapeutic, not uncomfortable.
