Naranga Kizhi (Lemon Bolus)

Naranga Kizhi sour lemon bolus therapy for frozen shoulder, sciatica and Vata-Kapha disorders at Agasthya Kerala

About Naranga Kizhi (Lemon Bolus)

Naranga Kizhi is a warming, anti-Vata bolus therapy where sour lemons are sliced and combined with rock salt, fenugreek, mustard, and rasnadi powder, tied into a linen bolus, sauteed in warm medicated oil, and massaged over the affected area. The combination of sour-fermenting citrus, warming herbs, and oil penetration makes Naranga Kizhi one of the most effective therapies for stubborn Vata-Kapha presentations — frozen shoulder, painful sciatica, post-stroke spasticity, and chronic neck stiffness. At Agasthya it is commonly prescribed for frozen shoulder protocols, severe sciatica, and conditions where deep, penetrating warmth is needed to break long-standing stagnation. The therapy is intensely warming and is selected when softer approaches have not produced sufficient mobilisation.

Patient Outcome

“I completed my 16th session today. The service is extremely professional — the doctor is highly skilled, and all the staff are cooperative and friendly. I was visiting because of severe neck pain. The doctor was clear from the beginning that the pain would not disappear immediately after the sessions, but with commitment to the treatment — which is the most important part — I may start noticing improvement after 1–2 months.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Naranga Kizhi so intensely warming?
The bolus combines four warming agents at once — sour lemon (acidic, penetrating), rock salt (heat-conducting), mustard and fenugreek (Ushna virya, warming potency), and rasnadi powder — all sauteed in medicated oil. Each individual ingredient is warming on its own; together they produce a depth of heat penetration that softer bolus therapies cannot match. This is why we reserve Naranga Kizhi for stubborn Vata-Kapha stagnation rather than using it as a first-line therapy.
Is Naranga Kizhi the right therapy for frozen shoulder?
It is one of the most useful tools we have for frozen shoulder (Apabahuka in Ayurveda). The intense penetrating warmth and citrus-mustard combination break the long-standing Kapha stagnation that locks the shoulder capsule. At Agasthya it is typically combined with Marma Abhyangam, Nasyam, internal medicines, and graduated movement work as part of a 14–21 day protocol — rarely on its own, because frozen shoulder responds best to a layered approach.
Can Naranga Kizhi be used in acutely inflamed conditions?
No. Naranga Kizhi is contraindicated in acute Pitta-aggravated inflammation — burning pain, redness, severe heat, active flare-ups. Its warming character would worsen these. In those presentations Dr. T.D. Bose will typically choose a cooling therapy (Lepanam with cooling paste, Dhanyamla Dhara) first to settle the inflammation, then introduce Naranga Kizhi later once the underlying picture shifts to Vata-Kapha.
