Snehapanam

Snehapanam internal therapeutic ghee administration for chronic joint disease, skin conditions and Panchakarma preparation at Agasthya Kerala

About Snehapanam

Snehapanam is the internal administration of medicated ghee (or, less commonly, medicated oil) over a series of mornings in graduated, increasing doses. Unlike external therapies that work on the surface, Snehapanam lubricates the body from within — saturating tissues at the cellular level, lubricating joints, mobilising deep-seated toxins (Ama) lodged in the channels, and preparing the body for the major purificatory therapies of Panchakarma. The medicated ghee is selected by Dr. T.D. Bose based on your prakriti and condition: different ghee preparations target different organ systems and dosha imbalances. Snehapanam is also a stand-alone therapy in chronic skin disease, certain neurological conditions, and joint conditions involving long-standing Vata aggravation. The course typically runs 3–7 days with the patient drinking the ghee in carefully measured doses each morning on an empty stomach.

Duration

Daily oral administration over 3–7 days in graduated increasing doses, given on an empty stomach in the morning

Key Benefits

Saturates tissues with medicated ghee at the cellular level — deeper than any external therapy can reach
Lubricates joints from within — supports the same joints external oil therapies work on
Mobilises deep-seated Ama (toxins) lodged in srotas, preparing them for purification
Essential preparatory step (Purvakarma) for Panchakarma in select cases
Effective in chronic skin diseases when the underlying picture is dryness and Vata aggravation
Graduated dosing allows the physician to match intensity precisely to your digestive capacity

Indications

  • Chronic Vata-aggravated joint conditions
  • Preparatory step before Virechanam, Vasti, or other Panchakarma procedures
  • Chronic skin diseases (psoriasis, eczema, chronic dermatitis)
  • Neurological conditions involving long-standing Vata imbalance
  • Chronic constipation with Vata involvement
  • Specific cases of hyperlipidaemia and metabolic disorders (with appropriate ghee selection)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Snehapanam difficult to undergo?
Drinking medicated ghee on an empty stomach takes some adjustment, especially on days 3–5 when the dose is at its peak. The taste is unfamiliar and the volume can feel substantial. But the dose is graduated specifically so your body can adapt — we start low, watch your digestion, and only increase if you are tolerating well. Most patients find it manageable, and the depth of effect on chronic conditions makes it worthwhile.
What is the difference between Snehapanam and just taking ghee with food?
Two things make Snehapanam different. First, the ghee is medicated — cooked with specific herbs over hours so it carries their therapeutic potency. Second, it is taken in graduated, calculated doses on an empty stomach, where it is absorbed directly into deeper tissues rather than being mixed with food and digested superficially. Ghee with food is nourishment; Snehapanam is targeted internal therapy.
When is Snehapanam prescribed at Agasthya?
We use Snehapanam selectively. The two main contexts are: (1) as a preparatory step before specific Panchakarma procedures in cases that genuinely need that depth of preparation, and (2) as stand-alone internal therapy for chronic Vata-aggravated joint and skin conditions where external therapies alone are insufficient. Most patients on routine back-pain or knee-pain protocols will not need Snehapanam — it is a deeper, more selective tool.
