Varicose Veins Ayurvedic Treatment in Kerala
Aching, heavy, swollen legs from varicose veins? Find non-surgical relief through Ayurveda at Agasthya, Kerala.
Varicose veins develop when the valves inside your leg veins weaken, letting blood pool and the veins bulge. At Kerala's Agasthya Ayurvedic Medical Centre, our gentle external therapies and internal medicines ease the pain, heaviness, swelling and night cramps — improving circulation and helping you stay on your feet, comfortably. Online consultation available before you travel.
“I had 10 days of treatment for back pain, left leg pain, arthritis and varicose vein. Tremendous improvement after 5 days, and I continued the rest of the treatment. Remarkable improvement! Clean, simple Kerala food and a comfortable, homely stay — no comparison to other Ayurveda centres.”

Understanding Varicose Veins
Veins carry blood back to the heart against gravity, helped by one-way valves that stop blood flowing backwards. When those valves weaken, blood pools in the leg veins, which then enlarge, twist and become visible as the bulging, rope-like varicose veins just under the skin — most often on the calves and inner legs.
The veins themselves are only part of the story. What brings most people to us are the day-to-day symptoms:
Aching, throbbing or a feeling of heaviness in the legs
Swelling around the ankles and lower legs, worse by evening
Night cramps and restless legs
Itching or burning over the affected veins
Skin discoloration or hardening in long-standing cases
Visible bulging, twisted blue-green veins
Who Tends to Get Them
Varicose veins are far more common in people who spend long hours on their feet — teachers, nurses, shop and factory staff, traffic police and chefs. Other common factors are pregnancy, ageing, family history, being overweight, and prolonged standing or sitting. Women are affected more often than men.
The Ayurvedic Perspective — Siraja Granthi
In Ayurveda, varicose veins are understood as Siraja Granthi — knotted, dilated vessels arising from aggravated Vata combined with vitiated Rakta (blood) and impaired circulation. Treatment therefore aims to pacify Vata, purify and improve the flow of Rakta, and strengthen the tone of the supporting tissues — rather than simply masking the discomfort.
How Agasthya Treats Varicose Veins
Our approach is non-surgical and built around three pillars, guided by Dr. T.D. Bose and refined over three decades of practice. We are deliberately gentle around the affected veins — heavy pressure directly over them can aggravate the condition.
We want to be straight with you about what to expect: Ayurvedic treatment cannot repair the damaged valves inside the vein or erase veins that have already formed. What it can do — reliably, for most patients — is relieve the pain, heaviness, swelling and cramps, improve circulation, and slow further progression, often helping patients avoid or delay surgery for symptom control.
1. External Therapies to Improve Circulation
Marma Abhyangam — gentle, directional therapeutic massage with medicated oils to encourage venous return and ease heaviness.
Pizhichil — a stream of warm medicated oil that nourishes tissues and soothes Vata-driven pain and cramping.
Dhanyamla Dhara — a warm herbal-decoction stream particularly helpful for reducing swelling and that heavy, fatigued feeling in the legs.
Upanaham — medicated herbal poultice/wrap applied to the legs to reduce inflammation and discomfort.
2. Internal Ayurvedic Medicines
Tailored internal formulations work from within to purify and improve the flow of Rakta (blood), pacify Vata, and strengthen the tone of the vein walls and supporting tissues. These are continued at home for a period after your in-patient stay.
3. Leg-Care & Lifestyle Guidance
Lasting relief depends on daily habits. Our doctors guide you on leg elevation, simple movement and calf exercises, the right use of compression, avoiding prolonged standing, and diet to support healthy circulation. These changes protect the gains made during treatment.
